Pros and cons of ionic liquids (ILs)

Ionic liquids typically result from melting point depression of API salts as compared to akin salts with small counterions. Although this depression may positively drive pharmaceutical parameters including the dissolution rate or solubility some caveats apply. Anja Balk and colleagues discuss the “pro et contra” of using ionic liquid approaches for pharmaceutical application.
